Real Life Example #1
Some authorized computer system users at the
Atlanta office of the IRS were found to be reading records of well known individuals
(movie stars, members of congress, etc.) to satisfy their curiosity. Even though
no dissemination of the information outside of IRS offices was proven AND the
users were authorized to have access to that type of information,
the specific access was outside of duties assigned to the individuals and was
not an authorized use of IRS files. As a result, involved individuals were punished
officially and the public furor led to a significant reduction in funding for
new IRS computer systems.
